Ultimately, none of the endings are 'right' or 'wrong' it's all up to how you see it playing out. 'lesser.' Therefore, under the explanation given the 'Shepard Lives' ending will eventually result in the end of all organic life. Eventually, synthetic life will destroy organics now that the Reapers aren't around to cull the advanced societies and spare the If you believe what the Star Brat thing says, then Shepards choice in the 'Destroy' ending will only bring a temporary victory. Either way, there is no chance of seeing Shepard again in future titles, he's eventually dead either way. I think Bioware intentionally left that open ended so people could fill in the blanks As for rather or not he/she is reunited with their love interest, that's up to the imagination of the player. I have always taken that ending to mean Shepard lives as well.
but after what's happened with Mass Effect 3, the next installment will be under heavy scrutiny to ensure that the furore with ME3 doesn't happen again. In any event, the ball is now solely in BioWare/EA's court as to what they do now with the franchise. and then a new threat appears or whatever. Say a hundred years after the war, rebuilding is mostly complete etc etc.
Destroy does seem to be the cannonical ending as future games can follow on from this ending quite easily. Sounds noble at first, but who's to say that the Reapers eventually decide that the choice chosen was wrong and go back to harvesting? Started the Sith War as the precursor to The Old Republic, to unite the galaxy against a greater threat etc). Seems similar in some aspects to what Skynet did (Or even why Revan The Control ending has a Terminator-ish feel to it, in command of such a powerful force 'for protection'. To have the whole Mass Effect story end with everyone living happily ever after. even Starbrat said that Synthesis is the pinnacle of evolution. I don't think it was meant as canonical, just that it is possible that Shepard lives in said Ending.Ĭonsidering how open ended the Destroy ending is, it does seem more plausible that any future games in the series MAY refer to this ending.
